Thanks Andrew for taking a look!
I believe adding the check in {{createConnection}} should do the trick -- at
least for the 2 issues we've found so far.
The 2 changes to method signatures are to remove an unnecessary exception, and
to make the line shorter than 80 chars. We can make these changes separately
too.
