wire-level backward compatibility is a core feature of protobuf, I'm not
worried there. What I am worried about is compile-compat, as that is what broke
hadoop, hbase, etc, everything using protobuf 2.4. Google's internal build
process is a clean, unified build of everything, so they don't have to worry
about source level compatibliity
