I think we need to do this. It is time, and the time begins with a 3.0

I note there is actually one possible backwards compatibility strategy, 
producing a special jar of old hamlet stuff which people could use until 
they've moved. But that might just discourage people from migrating, which is 
fine if they build and run on java 8, but if anything is distributed to run on 
java 9, things will break downstream then.
