Eric Yang commented on HADOOP-16214:
------------------------------------

[~ibuenros] {quote}NN and other base Hadoop components will only use <user> to
determine authorization{quote}

Hadoop recommends format <service>/<host>@<realm> to create a security
perimeter. Using user only principal means that you may have default proxy
user rule default to wildcard host (*). This means anyone who got a copy of
hadoop service principal gets super user power from any laptop that can connect
to kdc. This is less secure than intended setup, please check.

How about Kerberos rule mechanism == mit to support multiple components
principal and multiple components principal more than 2 components don't become
service principal, and Kerberos rule mechanism == hadoop will remain unchanged?
Can this proposal make everyone happy?

> Kerberos name implementation in Hadoop does not accept principals with more
> than two components

> org.apache.hadoop.security.authentication.util.KerberosName is in charge of
> converting a Kerberos principal to a user name in Hadoop for all of the
> services requiring authentication.
> Although the Kerberos spec
> ([https://web.mit.edu/kerberos/krb5-1.5/krb5-1.5.4/doc/krb5-user/What-is-a-Kerberos-Principal_003f.html])
>  allows for an arbitrary number of components in the principal, the Hadoop
> implementation will throw a "Malformed Kerberos name:" error if the principal
> has more than two components (because the regex can only read serviceName and
> hostName).
