logging with DEBUG threshold and tried several test runs, I still didn't see 
any useful logs or exception when the stuck tasks happened. Is it possible some 
inner exception was swallowed somehow?

On the other hand, I found that when setting fs.s3a.retry.limit to a lower 
number (like 1, 2, or 3),  the stuck task problem seemed to go away magically. 
I almost feel it (retrying fewer times in the inner retry) is a solution to 
this annoying problem.

By the way, I used hadoop-aws 3.2.0 and default file committer in all my tests.
