Fixes the NPE and also the recursion issues that cause paths to erroneously be
copied into existing subdirs in the remote tree. It looks worse than it is,
but most of it is moving common code into {{CommandWithDestination}}.
HDFS tests need to be updated, but HDFS-2038 has them temporarily broken. I've
extensively tested via cmdline.
