@adoroszlai, given that the new approach changes only a few classes,
backporting itself requires low effort. my main concern is whether we've
overlooked any corner cases in this change. it would be great if someone could
help with integration with downstream projects and validation before public
release - so far, we have only received positive feedback from Spark
integration (from me and eBay)
