HADOOP_OPTS isn't applied for Task JVMs. For Task JVMs, set "mapred.child.java.opts" in mapred-site.xml (Or via Configuration for per-job tuning), to the opts string you want it to have. For example "-Xmx200m -Dsomesysprop=abc".
