Wouldn't tabs show up as a weird character, and not just blank spaces?

This depends on the viewer. Common mail clients as well as the common breed of text editors, XML editors and IDEs show tabs as a fixed number of spaces, usually 8 by default, occasionally this can be configured. in fact, I don't know of *any* editor which shows a literal tab (Unicode U+0009) not as a fixed number of spaces. The presence of tabs can often only be inferred from a "jumping cursor", which is an annoyance in itself. Real word processors are another matter, but they usually use tabs for building sort of tables (what else?), and don't visualize tabs with something else either.

I don't
want to just undo it since I liked the changes I made.
I meant, undo inserting tabs, replacing it with proper spaces.
Your attempt seemed to be successful.
