the changes from the refactoring branch have been in HEAD for a little
while now without too many complaints. so, i'd like to start the ball
rolling for a baseline release for this codebase. this will give those
people who've been using this code base an official release and also
allow people using the 0.5 codebase a chance to think about upgrading.
no deprecated methods will be removed and it should be compatible with
the 0.5 release. i volunteer to act as release manager.
