On the whole I agree that CLI1 is buggy and inflexible but I'd encourage you to check out the beta for CLI2 (http://www.apache.org/~roxspring/cli/), I think you'll find it much more clean and far more flexible (though I'm biased). Unfortunately the docs are completely out of date but the tests should give you an idea of how to proceed, or come to commons-user and ask for help.
