I don't expect getString() to throw an exception right away, I expect it to be
written like this:
    Object o = getProperty(key); // throws NoSuchElementException if no such
prop.
    return ConvertUtils.convert(o, String.class); // try to convert to string
                                                  // if not possible, throw
                                                  // ConvertException

or, more generically:
public Object getProperty(String key, Class cls) {
    return ConvertUtils.convert(getProperty(key), cls);
}

(the exceptions should be runtime)

therefore, getString() will return a concatenation, and getInt will throw an
exception, as should be the case.

if the user wants to get the first element of the list, he can freely do it:
getList(key).get(0).
