The code key.toString() will be very quick if key is a String (it returns this, and hotspot will deal with it if necessary). So, I don't believe that to be a major peformance issue. The lower casing of the string could be a little slow, however that is the kind of issue I would want to leave to a profiler and solve if it actually caused a problem.
