I never knew this before (and am somewhat amazed) but someone suggested it might be useful: Type CTRL+\ to get a backtrace of where it is hanging. If no backtrace appears, that means it's an internal VM bug. I've tried this on a little hanging program I wrote and it does indeed show a backtrace.
