http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=35366 contains a replacement for the escape/unescape methods. The comment in the original code says to rewrite to use a Writer. The patch actually changes the method signature to pass in a Writer and have the method write into it. Is that the intention of the comment? Do we want to deprecate the existing method or just add an additional overloaded method?
