The test code worked for 2.1 so I had a closer look at the sources. 

You are right, the problem ist NOT the missing method HashMap.putAll(Map map) 
but differences in the implementation of HashMap.put(Object key, Object value). 
In 2.1 there is a check whether "value" is an ArrayList (-> call super.put(key, 
value)) or not (-> add value to the interal ArrayList for that key).
