I have also spent quite a few hours looking at this and I agree that
from the reports it looks like a real (and bad) bug.  I will look at
it again this evening using your debugging jar - that's the kind of
thing I was doing before when I looked at it before.  I was also
working on improving the documentation in the code, which is a bit
inscrutable.  I would be -0 for release as is.  Will post more after
digging in again.
