I used Rational XDE (http://www.rational.com/products/xde/index.jsp) to reverse engineer the java source and then the real work starts. Splitting the class diagrams into manageable parts, adding dependencies and creating sequence diagrams.
Creating a good diagram layout is also a lot of work.
So no magic tool… I tried several but you always spend a lot of time drawing and organizing.

How are you generating these UML diagrams? Is this a maven plugin or an IDE feature or other tool?
