Look at http://cvs.apache.org/~dirkx/sgala.html
there is a zoomable map, courtesy of asemantics and dirkx.
I think both approaches are nice. I would change the imagemap you quote to have one submap per continent to be able to see people in densely populated areas like Central Europe, East Coast and California. But still, the map in indexable by search engines, while the zoomable one is not. OTOH, the zoomable one, in spite of projections problems in some areas, is amazing in the map quality once you zoom in.
It would be great to have a javascript wizard working on the UI, at least on mozilla it is a bit fragile.
I also like more the one with day/night separation: http://cvs.apache.org/~sgala/nightmap.html because it allows me to guess the time in different areas at a glance. It gets built every hour for this reason (I should put a meta=refresh in the perl script). And the absence of political divisions is a plus for me, utopian in times of war, to remind us that the land has no lines drawn in it.

BTW: kaz added a URL where there are no coordinates. I wonder if this was intentional, or just in the way to put them. Also, what should we do with people with no ICMB tag?
Slive has, quite possibly, reversed latitude and longitude. He would be in the east coast with the change. Even with April's snows, it would be more comfortable than the Antartics. ;-)
