I would recommend lua, it's extremely light-weight ( we're talking about 6 megs here ), easily embedable, dynamically typed, full-featured, multi-paradigm, and has been in real-world use for many years, has two books, actively maintained, and is very popular in a few niche areas such as games scripting.
