As much as I don't like C++, Qt is a breeze and the docs are great.
Porting from Linux to Windows required only some changes in a special
SDL thing we did. Porting the rest of our C++ code was a nightmare tho.

(and for the sggestion of using X11/Xlib, I've done that, too.
Don't go there, unless you work on matchbox or related stuff.)
