About two years ago I was working on getting USB Host mode working "out of the box" on the GP2X, and I ran into this problem - the missing cap/resistor combo meant that the USB Host controller interface wasn't able to accurately determine what sort of node it was communicating with, and thus the onboard Linux driver tried to treat it as a hub node when it was really just a 'terminal' node.
