I think you need to specify your map settings in ~/.navit/navit.xml:

have a look in the navit wiki:
http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Configuring_NavIt#The_mapset

in the navit.xml i recommend to enable zoom buttons
   <osd enabled="yes" type="button" x="-96" y="-96" command="zoom_in()"

src="zoom_in.xpm" />
   <osd enabled="yes" type="button" x="48"  y="-96" command="zoom_out()"

src="zoom_out.xpm" />

In the past i also used this how to to install for navit
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/QtMoko#Navit_Installation
With qtmokov35 i had some complications with network interfaces since this
archive overwrites some of their config files.

The navit version from the repositories works well. Therefor you need to use
QX and matchbox (fulscreenmode, windowmanager etc ...)

Hope that could help & Good Luck
Willhelm
