I began to prepare to install Gauntlet on our mail server and discovered
a few issues.
I don't seem to have a XYNTService.exe or .ini file anywhere near any
sniffer folders.
I did discover a pair of them on the C drive in Clam folders.
When I look at the properties for Sniffer in Services there is this:
C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\SRVANY.exe
Which I take is another way of managing Sniffer. We may have done a
manual upgrade from a 2x version to the client server of Sniffer but
it's been so long ago I can't remember. It runs fine and I'm reluctant
to re install it. Pete at ARM suggested leaving it alone as it's working
quite well.
Having said that, I'd still like to try Gauntlet and am wondering how.
I think I need to add to either the Declude folder or one of the sub
folders the XYNTService.exe and ini files and modify the ini file as
described in the instillation instructions.
Since I don't have Sniffer configed to use XYNT I think I have to, from
the command line move to that sub directory and initialize it?
Since I'm not really an IT person, but am stuck with maintaining the
mail server I'd appreciate any help offered.
BTW I looked tonight and we've been running Ipswitch and Declude since
either 1996 or 1997. Boy that's been a long time.
I did run the filter without the HOLD function, simply WARN and found
few matches. I'm interested in what happens in the early morning when we
get quite a bit of spam, as it seems to fall off in the afternoon. I'm
tempted to hold everything not whitelisted as early in the day quite a
bit gets through. We forward to Pete anything with a Weight of 18 and
not caught by Sniffer but quite a bit comes in with low scores.
thanks in advance
John
