Kathleen Garman- - DeWitt Clinton Park
Kathleen Garman is the Head Gardener of the beautiful Maria Perennial Garden
in DeWitt Clinton Park. Under her direction, a weed and bottle-strewn space was
transformed into picture-perfect parkland. This year, The Rose Garden was
created and next year's "Olde Orchard Hill" is being planned. Kathleen has been
central in coordinating the "It's My Park!" Days and the Daffodil Project.
Thanks to Kathleen, the recently produced Dewitt Clinton Park "Map and Guide"
is filled is with historical information about the park. She was also
instrumental in the group receiving a Kaplan Grant, to cover the cost of new
fencing, pathway reconstruction and the installation of an irrigation system in
DeWitt Clinton Park.

Ms. Garman and other in the neighborhood have joined other park residents in
the creation of the DeWitt Clinton Park Conservancy, an advocacy, and grass
roots volunteer group working in tandem with the NYC Parks Dept & Partnerships
for Parks to completely renovate the park, maintain its new childrens garden,
keeps its dog run running ( bad pun) and to make its very active ballfields
accessible to children of the neighborhood.

The DeWitt Clinton Parks Conservancy, in tandem with the Hudson River Park
Conservancy, Manhattan Community Board 4, the Parks Dept, the NYS/NYC Depts of
Traffic is working to create a pedestrian bridge from DeWitt Clinton Park to
the new Hudson River Park over the very busy, and dangerous Miller/West
Side/Joe DiMaggio Highway so all New Yorkers and visitors can enjoy both spaces
without risking life and limb.

Subject: [Community_garden] wanted: community garden photos-early 20th
century/Touch the Soil

Hi everyone,
If anyone has any photos of community gardens or school gardens from the
1890s-WWI they would be able to scan and email me by Friday I would be most
appreciative. They would be used in an article about early cg's for a
magazine, Touch the Soil ( www.touchthesoil.com ). Or, if you have an
interesting history tidbit you would like to share feel free to email me or
give me a call.

Check out the Nov/Dec issue of Touch the Soil for 2 beautiful glossy
articles about community gardens!

Thanks,
Lexie
