Please send me a copy, so I can show the gardeners at NYC's Clinton Community
Garden what they don't have to pay.

As we are a NYC Parks Greenthumb garden ( and get our water gratis from NYC
as a NYC Parks facility) and are also a 501(c)(3), (we were set up as such with
the help of the Trust for Public Land back in the early '80's) we've been able
to get by on voluntary contributions from gardeners, foundation grants, sales
of t-shirts, coffee mugs, baseball hats, and assorted "tschotchkes," at the
Annual 9th Avenue Food Festival, and our annual sale of honey from our beehive.

The problem I've seen with plot fees as I've seen it play out in NYC gardens,
is that plot fees seem to give the gardener the feeling that work on common
areas, like paths, etc, is not a mandatory responsibility for them.

The plots in these gardens will be nice, depending on what the gardener's do,
but the common areas turn into the work of a few gardeners who care - an unfair
situation.

My two cents. NYC is not the rest of the country, and perhaps fee paying
gardeners elsewhere have less of a sense of entitlement and are more public
spirited.

Dear Friends at ACGA,

Thank you to everyone who responded to my note a while back asking for
details on plot fees in your city. I put the responses together in a
chart that shows plot fees around the country. If you'd like a copy,
drop me a note and I'll send it to you as a Word document.

Or maybe you didn't respond and have time to now as the weather gets
colder! If so, please drop me a note with this info:

Where do you garden?

How much do gardeners pay in plot fees?

Is there a low-income subsidy or sliding scale?

Do you charge pay deposit or other fees?

How large are your plots?

Many thanks,

Janet Parker
