I started a community garden last spring. We set up 5' by 20' foot plots.
Over the course of the growing season I found that the garden space was poorly
utilized. Some were not planted to give a good variety of veggies, some were
over planted with poor spacing. After this experience I decided to offer 4X4'
and 4X8' plots. We will be using the guide lines form Mel Bartholomew's,
"Square Foot Gardening". This should help to provide good production with a
variety of vegetables and flowers. The garden area is subject to deer grazing
in the plots. This SFG system easily accommodates covers from pests, deer, and
the elements of wind and too much sun. If people want more than one plot we can
accommodate their needs.
Also, there is a child care center nearby that we want to work with to provide
a plot or two to introduce gardening to the preschoolers.
