?Job Announcement:? Community Development Coordinator (Food Security) International Rescue Committee ? Project Overview ? Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.? The IRC San Diego Regional Office (IRC/SD) was established in 1975 to assist refugees relocating to the US and is the leading private, non-profit, non-sectarian resettlement agency in San Diego, having resettled over 20,000 refugees. IRC/SD has numerous programs to help refugees and asylees acculturate and work towards self-sufficiency. These programs include: case management; employment assistance; immigration services; financial literacy and micro enterprise programs; specialized programs for women and youth; and citizenship/English language classes. ? The San Diego IRC Economic Development Program includes three components:? microenterprise assistance for refugee entrepreneurs (direct lending, business plan development, technical assistance, etc.), financial literacy services (classroom trainings, free tax prep, etc.) and an array of community development/food security initiatives (detailed below). ? Community Development:? Food Security Initiatives ? The IRC Community Development program aims to create innovative projects that address food security among San Diego?s refugee and low-income communities.? The current departmental initiatives focus on programs that increase access to fresh, affordable foods. ?IRC provides a continuum of food security services to assist the refugee community through the resettlement process, from providing free produce to clients and increasing food stamp participation, to starting community gardens and assisting refugee entrepreneurs in opening local food businesses.? ? Scope of Work: Under the supervision of the IRC Community Development Specialist, the Community Development Coordinator (CDC) will plan, direct, and coordinate activities to launch a local farm to school program and high school garden project, both of which will be piloted at Crawford Educational Complex. ? The CDC will work closely with the IRC Community Development Specialist and Community Development AmeriCorps*VISTA, as well as IRC Students? Plus staff, the Tierra Miguel Foundation, and the San Diego City Schools Food Service Department to ensure that the goals and program objectives are accomplished in accordance with prescribed regulations, contract terms, time limitations and funding requirements. ? Essential Job Functions: ? Plan and direct a nascent school garden project at Crawford Educational Complex, a local high school that is home to IRC?s after school program ? Assist IRC Community Development staff in running the Gardening and Food Justice Team at Crawford High School ? Create and implement garden-based lesson plans for high school students and provide curriculum support to high school teachers when necessary ? Collaborate with local nonprofit organizations and the San Diego City Schools Food Service Department to launch a farm to school pilot project for the San Diego School District. ? Work with the IRC Community Development staff and community partners to develop farm to school curriculum ? Build and strengthen partnerships with the refugee community and relevant organizations/individuals ? Assist IRC staff with planning/sponsoring educational and outreach events/opportunities ? Work with IRC Community Development staff to develop local and national advocacy efforts to strengthen and secure strong food security policies? ? Volunteer recruitment and management ? Other duties as assigned ? Job Requirements ? 1.????? Experience working with high school age youth and developing curriculum. 2.????? Garden/farming experience REQUIRED 3.????? Demonstrated leadership and ability to plan and orchestrate programs. 4.????? University degree strongly preferred. 5.????? Passion for food security issues. 6.????? Second language (Somali, Arabic ? or other) a plus. 7.????? Experience organizing with refugees and/or immigrants a plus. 8.????? Interest in micro-enterprise and small business development. 9.?????
