Crabtree Farms Opens Community Garden Crabtree Farms opens the Community Garden for its seventh year on Saturday, March 3. The Community Garden Program educates the public on how to grow their own food by providing access to garden tools, amenities and organically cultivated soil. The Community Garden at Crabtree Farms is the largest community garden open to the public in Chattanooga. In keeping with the sustainable focus of Crabtree Farms? overall mission, the Community Garden is organic, meaning only natural pest controls may be applied. No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers may be applied. The Community Garden Program provides access to healthy soils in a communal atmosphere. Residents interested in renting plots may not have access to garden space, because of living in apartments or having shady yards. The Garden creates a small community of gardeners to share secrets and tips. 41 garden plots are available for rental to Chattanooga residents for the 2007 season. For a fee of only $80, every garden member leases a 200 square foot plot from March through November. Members have exclusive access to a tool shed, compost and water. Crabtree Farms is located in downtown Chattanooga, on one acre of the Crabtree Farms Urban Farm, half a mile off the Rossville Boulevard South exit on I-24 (1000 East 30th Street Chattanooga, TN 37409) All those interested in becoming a Community Gardener, open to all ages and gardening levels. Crabtree Farms? staff work with the gardeners to share planting tips and organic gardening techniques. Many varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers will be planted by the gardeners.
