Position Duties: Work with five P-Patch Program staff to manage 70 Seattle neighborhood community gardens. Coordinate across departments to manage the open space for multiple user groups and work directly with the property owners serving as a resource and liaison for community volunteers. Oversee physical development and redevelopment of an average of three to five public open space/community gardens annually. Develop, edit and publish Best Practices Leadership Manuals, resource lists, develop discussion groups, surveys, and outreach materials that aid volunteers in management and development of community gardens and open space resources. Seek and secure funds to supplement available sources either by seeking the funding directly or by consulting with community groups on how to access a range of funding. Emphasize and promote inclusion; develop specific programming for immigrant and other multi-cultural groups. Develop policy and program responses that focus on emerging opportunities and needs in conjunction with City and Department objectives, policies and special initiatives. Work with many levels of City staff and a variety of community members and leaders. Current P-Patch Program areas include: community gardening, market gardening, youth gardening, open space greening and food security initiatives. The Department*s priorities are Building Strong Communities, Advancing Race Relations and Social Justice, Investing in Academic Success for All Kids, and Delivering Excellence in Service. This position represents the Department and its priorities, as well as City government, to the public. To that end, strong customer service skills and the ability to work with diverse populations are critical. Required Qualifications Two years of related experience and the equivalent of a BA degree in social science, planning, environmental studies, horticulture, agriculture, or a related field. Requires working evenings and weekends to conduct meetings and to perform field work. Experience with volunteer and project management. Demonstrated community or grass roots organizing skills. Word processing skills. Requires gardening work involving lifting up to 50 pounds, working outdoors in all types of weather, and standing, walking or bending for extended periods of time. State of Washington Driver*s License or equivalent mobility. This position is funded for 30 hours/week, but may have the potential for up to 40 hours/week Desired Qualifications Experience with program development. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and be a skilled listener. Experience working with diverse communities. Ability to work collaboratively. Fluency in one or more of the following languages: Lao languages, Russian or other Eastern European languages or Horn of Africa languages.
