You might remember me writing now and then on the Ron Mandella Community
Garden in Sacramento, which was on state land and was slated for
development. We were able to get equal amount of land at 2 locations,
site one (2/3 of the amount of land that was lost) was opened a few
blocks away about 4 years ago, and site two (1/3 of the original site)
was saved in place but the soil had to be cleaned. (Cal EPA grant to
remove 24" of soil from the whole site - about $450,000 worth of soil
testing, removing and replacing the soil due to contaminents)

Saturday june 9th 10-2pm at 14th and Q street in downtown Sacramento we
will have the grand opening of the Fremont Community Garden (formerly
knows as the ron mandella site) .. a side note on this garden ... you
might recall the assignation attempt of past president Gerald Ford on
the grounds of the California State Capital, which is 2 blocks north of
this garden.. well as it turns out.. Lynette "squeaky" Fromme (a past
charles mansion follower) made that attempt, which we all know failed..
but what you probably don't know is that she was a community gardener at
the Mandella garden (probably the most infamous com. Gardener)...that
was before I was involved with that garden

The new garden was completely redone...down to 24" below ground and then
donated to the city parks dept.

Its fenced high density garden has 52 plots, and is a joint use with 2
bocce ball courts (we could not clean the soil near the roots of old
walnut trees - so we made the courts), fruit and citrus trees and 4 ADA
raised beds, with all pathways being decomposed granite.

Come celebrate with us at this milestone event. Look me up in the ACGA
tent and I will be glad to give you a tour!

Bill Maynard

ACGA vice president , Sacramento
