Crabtree Farms Opens Community Garden March 5 Crabtree Farms will open the Community Garden on March 5. Forty-one garden plots are available for rental for the 2005 season to Chattanooga residents. The Community Garden is located on one acre of Crabtree Farms and is now in its fifth year. The Community Garden plots are open to all ages and gardening levels. Crabtree Farms has expanded the number of plots to accommodate the growing interest in the Garden. For a one-time seasonal fee of $70, every garden member leases a 200 square foot plot. Members have exclusive access to a tool shed, compost and water. Plots are also available for members interested in exchanging work hours on the farm in lieu of the rental fee. The Community Garden at Crabtree Farms is the largest community garden open to the public in Chattanooga. In keeping with the sustainable focus of Crabtree Farms overall mission, the Community Garden is organic, meaning only natural pest controls may be applied. No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers may be applied. Crabtree Farms staff work with the gardeners to share planting tips and organic gardening techniques. Many varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers will be planted by the gardeners. The Community Garden Program provides access to healthy soils in a communal atmosphere. Members may not have access to garden space, either living in apartments or having shady yards. The Garden creates a community of fellow gardeners to share secrets and tips. The Community Garden Program seeks to educate the public on how to grow their own food by providing access to garden tools, amenities and organically cultivated soil. In addition, Crabtree Farms hosts the Fifth Annual Spring Plant Sale on April 16 from 8 a.m. 1 p.m., providing hard-to-find varieties for flower, vegetable and herb gardens. New this year will be a total of nine tomato varieties offered and more.
