July 18, 2005 For Immediate Release CFSC BRINGS THE SPIRIT OF FOOD JUSTICE TO THE HOME OF CIVIL RIGHTS! b Itbs Home Grown: Cultivating the Roots of Real Changeb Los Angeles, CA- The Community Food Security Coalition celebrates its 9th Annual Community Food Security Conference with a b Home Grownb theme in Atlanta, GA at the Westin Peachtree Plaza on October 6th thru 9th, 2005. CFSC brings this educational and empowering event to the home of the civil rights movement, with the intent of b cultivating the roots of real changeb in food security and social justice. The 9th Annual Food Security Conference is hosted by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Atlanta Urban Gardening Program in partnership with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Georgia Organics, Federation of Southern Cooperatives and Southern SAWG. This conference will present the movement with an effective forum to confront pressing issues in family farming, childhood obesity and hunger. The Atlanta location offers participants an opportunity to experience b Home Grownb feel of Georgia and its local food traditions, while reflecting the full spectrum and diversity of the community food sector. A Keynote address by Georgia Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond highlights the event, following pre-conference short course trainings in Organic Certification, developing and strengthening coalitions, protecting the civil rights of those you work with and half a dozen field trips to local farms and urban gardens. Some 51 interactive workshops and panels will feature speakers from the frontlines of the community food sector. Projected to bring together some 600 practitioners from communities throughout North America, the conference provides an abundance of information and stimulating dialogue, grounded in solutions to the health and community development challenges facing both urban and rural communities. The Community Food Security Coalition is a North American organization of environmental, nutrition, sustainable agriculture, community development, gardening, anti-poverty and anti-hunger groups. CFSC seeks to develop self-reliance among all communities in obtaining their food and creating systems of growing, manufacturing processing, distributing and selling food that is regionally based and grounded in the principles of equity, health and sustainability.
