LIZ CHRISTY GARDEN IN JEOPARDY On June 23rd representatives of the Liz Christy Community Garden met with AvalonBay, the developer of the property that is adjacent to the garden. At that meeting Fred Harris, the senior vice-president of AvalonBay, made it clear that he intends to maximize his profits by using the cheapest and most destructive methods and he refuses to consider any other conventional, non-intrusive methods that would preserve the entire garden. Instead, AvalonBay insists that they must dig up 200 square feet of the garden, and destroy 10 trees including the rare Blue Atlas Cedar and many other plants in order to construct their foundation. In return, Mr. Harris offered the gardeners an undefined sum of money to restore that part of the garden he intends to destroy. On behalf of the community, the gardeners refused AvalonBays money, and insisted that Mr. Harris live up to the promise he made to preserve and protect the garden. The decision on whether or not to allow AvalonBay to excavate into the garden will be made by the Mayor's office very soon. We urge you to call Mayor Bloomberg at 311 and Deputy Mayor Daniel Doctoroff at (212) 788-3000 now. Tell them that the Liz Christy Garden is public parkland and is not for sale. ______________________________________________________ The American Community Gardening Association listserve is only one of ACGA's services to community gardeners.
