If you go into the archives of this listserve about a year or so ago, you'll see some postings back and forth from the author and interested gardeners on the research that led up to "The Struggle for Eden: Community Gardens in New York" by Malve von Hassell. I know that I gave the author a tour of the Clinton Community Garden in Hell's Kitchen and spent some time discussing my take on gardening below 14th Street. As one of the early "seed bombers", and one of the backs that moved rocks with Adam Purple and later moved out ot the neighborhood, I shared some of my reminiscences.
The author was appalled by the price that the publisher was asking for the book, and as she's a "normal person" like most of us, I tend to believe her. I have not read the book, but I've been told those who have that it is a serious piece of sociology. Best wishes.
