Sounds like Perilla. Try a Google search of Images for perilla. There
are two common varieties, green and purple.

Some ladies at the community garden who I think are Korean(we have few words

growing a leafy vegetable that I can not figure out what it is. It's about
the size of an adults palm and is a very rounded oval shape. On the edges
are tiny saw tooth shapes. It's light green. Someone asked me if it could
be an amaranth, but the seed pods are on top of the plant on a flower stalk
and remind me more of how basil flowers and goes to seed. It has a straight
vertical stalk and each leaf grows off the stalk separately. The leaves are
separated by several inches on the stem (though this could be an arifact of
the way they are harvested.) It's harvested by plucking leaves off from the
ground to the top. Most plants seem to be around 3 feet high when they get
their flowers.
