In my experience it depends on how interesting the speaker is, and how tuned in the speaker is to the interests of the audience. The more intereaction, enthusiasm, and involvement the audience has, the longer people will stay interested.

Subject: [cg] How Long Will They Sit Still?

I'm doing a series of gardening classes for the general public in one market
area. Part of the purpose is to determine if there is enough interest to
start a community garden. In your experience, how long is the attention span
for adults not currently signed on for a project?
