Nope - No blame for the Neighborhood Open Space Coalition, only praise. NOSC was doing Parks and all of us gardeners a BIG FAVOR by carrying our community garden insurance, especially as community gardens are not their core mission. And in all frankness, most of the community gardens and gardeners who took insurance through them did not belong to NOSC, show up at its fundraisers, do volunteer work for the NOSC organization - anything. They gave, we took - and we shouldn't cavil at the fact that NOSC ain't putting out insurance anymore - we never brought flowers. Bottom line - the cost of our insurance was cutting into the coffers of a bare bones not-for-profit. And NOSC couldn't afford to do it anymore. And we should all thank NOSC for all the work they've done. . In fact, cybergardens is one of NOSC's listserv's carried on their server! And NOSC's mission included Parks, Harbors and Gateway National Park. We're just one part. The fact that NOSC helped with insurance in the first place was extremely generous - but then they couldn't. NOSC deserves praise, not blame. And our continued thanks for carrying [EMAIL PROTECTED] Now the business of getting this supplementary insurance is in the laps of Parks and Greenthumb, where, in all fairness, it should have been all along. Now for the DOT gardens - you may want to reach out to Gerard Lordahl's group, out of the Council on the Environment NYC - CENYC. They've been doing Greenstreets gardens in traffic meridiens for a long, long time. Two highly competent gentlemen, Gerard Lordahl ( current ACGA president) and Lenny Librizzi ( former ACGA board member) may have some ideas for you on how to cover the insurance on DOT gardens. Here is the address, and good luck! Having read the updated email on garden insurance, I think most Green Thumb gardens feel a sense of relief and can wait out the winter. As a NY State DOT Green Thumb Garden site I am still very concerned about losing my site for lack of insurance. To the best of my knowledge DOT is not aware of this insurance issue. I am trying to get past the fact that NOSC allowed our policy to default without any correspondence. This was so socially irresponsible of them, and no written word or apology of any type has gone out. We have carried insurance via NOSC for the past 8 years as required by DOT. I need 1 million dollars in liability insurance now, not in the spring. I have spent a great part of last week and this week in contact with over 15 brokers with no luck . Today looks promising, but the initial quotes are well over $1,000 some as high as $1,500. We plan to purchase garden insurance for Nov05-Nov06, and then hopefully join forces with GT for a discounted insurance plan. If any other DOT gardens have successfully purchased insurance, please share this information with me. We are breaking our bank spending this type of money on insurance.
