While in Johannesburg, Holly Killmer, Margaret Englesson and I visited community garden projects in townships near Jo'burg. Many of the inhabitants lived in 'homes' slightly larger than our offices or bedrooms with limited access to electricity or water. Unemployment is high in the townships. Schools established gardens for educational purposes, but primarily to ensure kids have something to eat. One project was a group of single, middle-aged, unemployed women. The gardens, started with the help of a low-budget non-profit called the Food Gardens Foundation, provide much needed nutrition, energize the neighborhood, create pride and have brought community members together. They asked us if we might be able to help them buy seed for their summer planting season, which is a couple weeks away. We replied "we hope so!" To turn that hope into reality, we're putting on a benefit concert this week. Date: This Wednesday, September 11 Time: 6-8 PM Place: CafĂ Diem, 323 Main Street, Ames, IA No cover, donations requested for seeds, tools, and the use of an uncontaminated water. The musician performing is Abi Tapia, a sing songwriter from Portland, ME (friend of Holly). She played at the Library folk music series last fall. To learn more about the music of Abi Tapia visit her web site at abitapia.com Let us respond to September 11th with hope, action, and community! If you have questions please contact Holly Killmer at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or Gina at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Collecting seeds one song at a time! Please feel free to pass this along to others. The Agronomy Department, the Women Food and Agriculture Network, Henry A. Wallace Endowed Chair for Sustainable Agriculture and the Leopold Center contributed to travel expenses for three members of the Iowa group. I apologize for cross listings. -- -- Gina Marie McAndrews E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1126 Agronomy Hall Voice: 515.294.7832 Iowa State University Fax: 515.294.8146 Ames, IA 50011-1010 ______________________________________________________ The American Community Gardening Association listserve is only one of ACGA's services to community gardeners.
