To All, I failed to mention in the previous post that the newspaper weed barrier used in our planting rows will be covered with leaves not wood chips (no huge nitrogen tied up here). I get the leaves free from folks who rake and bag them up for disposal by the city (curbside pickup). What a deal! Free labor, free bagged leaf mulch.
The wood chips between the planted rows are for walking on. Any weeds that may grow in the wood chip paths are removed using a rototiller (2" depth). I can remove all the weeds in the wood chipped paths in about 30 minutes or less! I converted 4 rows into a raised row format 2 years ago and had great production from them.
