Jennifer Mercurio, who was a member of Manhattan Community Board 4, worked on

announcement.

Yes, it's the Junior League that's running this training.

The fact that this training is being run by the Junior League ( the ladies no
longer wear white gloves, I've been told) makes it a really good networking
opportunity for greening and good-government types who want to network with
money and extend their personal and organizational circle of influence - think
of "interconnected directorships," in a nice kind of way.

If I make a few bucks in that weekend poker game, I may invest in this course...

Subject: Train to be a (better) Board Member!

Hi all,

The Junior League?s award-winning Leadership Through Governance: Training for
Nonprofit Board Membership is open to the public this year, and I?m on the
committee bringing it to you. This is a fantastic, fun and informative course,
which will take place in our newly renovated headquarters building.

Are you interested in taking on a leadership role within your organization? Do
you often wonder how the programs you volunteer for are created and
implemented? Would you like to refresh yourself on the components and
responsibilities of a board to help take your board to the next level? If you
answered yes to any of these questions you should take advantage of the
award-winning Leadership Through Governance: Training for Nonprofit Board
Membership presented by the New York Junior League.

This course trains individuals interested in serving on the boards of NYC
nonprofit organizations and facilitates the placement of the course
participants onto these boards. Started in 1991, the Nonprofit Board
Clearinghouse (NPBC) has more than a decade of experience providing qualified
board members to a diverse group of nonprofit board agencies.

The 5-week course focuses on several areas of effective board participation
including governance, legal responsibilities, financial management,
fundraising, strategic planning and board development. Experienced individuals
who are all experts in their fields teach this course. It is supplemented with
a detailed training manual which includes course materials as well as relevant
articles, guidelines and tips for making your board experience as great as
possible.

Upon completion of the course, candidates are introduced to over 60 nonprofit
agencies in New York City seeking qualified board members. The agencies
represented fall into several types of organizations including the arts, social
services, advocacy, health and human services and children?s organizations.
Course graduates have been placed on a wide range of boards including, but not
limited to, the Alzheimer?s Association, the NY Historical Association, The
Books for Kids Foundation, Education Through Music and the Women?s Prison
Association. The NPBC committee works closely with all the organizations to
identify the most effective board members to meet their needs.

Open to the public, the course is hosted by the NYJL and is held twice a year,
in the fall and in the spring. This spring the course will be held at the the
Junior League of New York?s Headquarters located at 130 East 80th Street,
easily accessible by Madison Avenue Buses M1, M2, M3 and M4 as well as by the
#6 Subway train. The course will be held on the following nights: March 21,
March 28, April 4, April 11, and April 18 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. The course cost
is $275.00 for JL members and $300.00 for the public and includes course
materials, dinner and board-matching services. Please register no later than
Friday, March 17, 2006. For more information, please contact Carmel Napolitano
at 212-288-6226, ext. 317 or [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hope to see you there!

Best, Jenn
