Can you get local gardeners/horticulturists/landscapers/designers to donate time so people can renovate or start existing gardens? You could have a slide show of gardens they've done, and then everyone gets to bid on, say, 4 hours of design consult, or 4 hours of edible-garden planning, or 4 hours of site consult, or 4 hours of compost-bin setup and instruction. It would be great if the event were focused on food gardens, composting, bird/butterfly gardening, heirloom tomato varieties -- lots of opportunities for great slides. Find an auctioneer to handle the bidding.
