Hi, Folks!
While The Phoenix, our local newspaper, has been supportive of our community garden, the newspaper's blog now has an entry entitled: "Community Gardening vs. Public Housing" at this URL: http://www3.allaroundphilly.com/blogs/phoenixville/phoenixfiles/2007/12/topi c-community-gardening-vs-public.html As someone who has been in community gardening for the past 17 years, I can't count how many letters I've written when newspapers insist on framing the argument as "the hungry vs the homeless." Unfortunately, it looks like it's my turn to ask for help in educating the media, yet again, on this issue. Luckily, this is probably an instance where our input can help shape the future. Most of the reporters at The Phoenix are young and will move on to other papers - this could be a great teachable moment to educate them (and the rest of Phoenixville, as we really need all the support we can get) about how public housing and community gardens are not and should not "mutually exclusive." Thanks for your help and support.
