I'm not always so great at figuring out these things, so if someone has a
better guess, please, correct away!??

It's
my understanding that high water needs plants like about an inch of
water per week.? 400 sq. ft. would be about 33 cubic feet.? With about
7.5 gallons of water in a cubic foot, you'd need about 250 gallons per
week, or about 1000+ gallons per month.? I tried looking up average
monthly rainfalls in Boulder, and they're all over the map!, but it
seems to be expected between 1" to 1.5" per month in the spring and
summer months.? So, you'd need to supplement the rainfall by about
600-750 gallons per month.? A four month season might need in the area
of 2500+ gallons.?

Of course, using those good water practices? -- like the mulch and the roof
cachement and the planting patterns and the
hardier plants -- would probably cut needs down "quite a bit".??

I'm looking for information on programs that currently charge community
gardeners for their water consumption. Currently, we are opening a new
garden in our county where the gardeners will be charged by plot for water
consumption. We are considering making drip irrigation mandatory in the
gardens. I'm looking for feedback on best practices from those of you who
charge for water. If you have any suggestions for how to make this system
work fairly and smoothly, please let me know!

Also, if anyone has any estimations on how much water a 400 square foot
plot would typically consume during a growing season, we're located in an
arid climate (Boulder, CO) that would be very helpful as well!

Thanks so much,
Annie Sweeney
