In NYC, Just Food has a City Chicken program funded by Heifer International which supports city gardens raising hens for eggs. There is information on their website:

It was my experience that the chickens liked to tear up the freshly dug soil to look for grubs and worms. The regularly liked to lay down and use their wings to "dust" themselves too. This made a real mess of my garden and some bald spots in my lettuce and carrots and things with fine seed. The do fertilize the soil a bit and eat bad bugs and grubs but I made them a fenced in area to go outside in and fed them any grubs or weeds I found in my garden. They still give you the benefits of great eggs, bug killing, weed killing and company. I would not want to have chickens in my garden as a result.
