Growing Power hosts the FIRST GATHERING of the Growing Food and Justice for All
Initiative in Milwaukee at the State Fair Grounds

(MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN) ? Growing Power, Inc. along with a powerful network of
individuals, organizations and community based entities will convene at the
Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center for the FIRST ANNUAL GATHERING of the Growing
Food and Justice For All Initiative this September 19th ? 21st.

The Growing Food and Justice for All Initiative (GFJI) is a new initiative
aimed at dismantling racism and empowering low-income and communities of color
through sustainable and local agriculture. This comprehensive network views
dismantling racism as a core principal which brings together social change
agents from diverse sectors working to bring about new, healthy and sustainable
food systems and supporting and building multicultural leadership in
impoverished communities throughout the world.

Commencing the gathering will be a press conference held on September 19, 2008
at the Tommy G. Thompson Youth Center.

?Growing Power is proud to be hosting the first annual gathering of the Growing
Food and Justice for All Initiative here in Milwaukee. As a multicultural
organization, we value diversity within the sustainable agricultural movement,
at all levels from leadership to producers/consumers. It is our mission to
provide valuable resources to traditionally underserved communities, in
particular immigrant, African-American, Latino, Asian, and Native American
farmers,? said Will Allen, Chief Executive Officer of Growing Power. ?Like
several cities across the nation, the City of Milwaukee is faced with the
challenge of overcoming racial lines that have segregated city residents for
decades. Growing Power, dedicated to working with ALL people of ALL ethnic
backgrounds, socio-economic statuses, races, and religions within the city and
beyond, recognizes the value in supporting the GFJI.?

Groups from all over the country will be presenting topics such as Social
Justice campaigns, Immigrant/Migrant farmer justice, building
community-operated food systems using anti-racism principles, health
disparities between ethnic and economic groups, urban agriculture as a tool for
dismantling racism, strategies for developing People of Color leadership, and
public art in anti-racism work. On Thursday, Sept. 18th, Growing Power will
lead hands-on workshops in vermiculture and micro-green/sprouts production at
its Community Food Center on Silver Spring Dr..
Growing Power is a national nonprofit organization and land trust supporting
people from diverse backgrounds, and the environments in which they live, by
helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable
food for people in all communities. Growing Power implements this mission by
providing hands-on training, on-the-ground demonstration, outreach and
technical assistance through the development of Community Food Systems that
help people grow, process, market, and distribute food in a sustainable manner.
