This is a time for vigorous and positive action."~— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ****************************** Sustainable Communities Network Bluegrass Partnership for a Green Community Present >>>>Closing the Food____Gap<<<< A Regional Conference Lexington, KY Exploring New Ways to Grow Food, Eat Locally, Strengthen Community and Support the Local Economy SAVE THE DATE WHAT: Closing the Food__Gap, a regional conference will engage participants in discussions of how and why our food system works as it does, whether it is secure, just, and sustainable, and how it might be reshaped for the future. The conference will provide an interactive forum that enables attendees to make new connections and shareinformation around the common goal of developing innovative and practical solutions to local and national food-related challenges. These Featured speakers are coming to Kentucky!: Mark Winne, author of Closing the Food Gap, Resetting the Table in the Land of Plenty, Mark Winne… the executive director of the Hartford Food System in Hartford, Connecticut from 1979 to 2003. He is also a cofounder and board member of the Community Food Security Coalition. He was instrumental in the development and passage of the federal Community Food Projects Grant Program and farm-to-school legislation. Mark recently completed a two-year stint as a Food and Society Policy Fellow. He is now doing consulting and writing about food systems issues from his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mark will serve as keynote speaker on Thursday evening and will lead a 3-hour workshop, Advancing Food Policy Council, on Friday. Anthony Flaccavento, Executive Director of Appalachian Sustainable Development Anthony Flaccavento is a founding member and Executive Director of Appalachian Sustainable Development which has helped to create an infrastructure of sustainability in both agriculture and forestry in southwest Virginiaand northeast Tennessee. In sustainable agriculture, he has been instrumental in creating an alternative means of income through the promotion of certified organic farming and establishment of market opportunities for farmers, such as farmers' markets and a co-op program for new and experienced organic farmers. Featured workshop (Friday October 17): *Food Policy Council Development Workshop w/Mark Winne* This workshop is designed to assist individuals and organizations in Kentucky interested in the development of local, regional or state food policy councils.The training will emphasize the organizational development of coalitions and networks that may precede the actual establishment of a food policy council, the operation of food policy councils, and the development of effective local and state food policy strategies. As such, the workshop is suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience. We witness the Federal Government bailout of huge corporations and financial institutions and we figure that if they need help, then our community members do as well. We also want lots of community input into this direction of food policy council and sustainable local food systems.
