Hello,
Fruit trees do require a considerable amount of time and attention. If
you want to grow fruit, I would recommend planting strawberries and
raspberries. They are much easier to care for and if planted in the
spring of 2009 will yield fruit the summer of 2010, thus giving you a
much quicker return when compared to tree fruit.
Good luck.

Subject: [Community_garden] Establishing a fruit orchard in Central Ohio
andintroductions
Hi everyone. This is my first time posting on the list so I would like
to introduce myself and the project with which I work. I am the
AmeriCorps member serving as the community garden coordinator at the
YWCA Family Center in Columbus, Ohio. We are a transitional housing
facility for homeless families in Columbus and the surrounding areas.
Our garden, which just finished its second season is integrated into the
after school programs at the center and supplement the produce needs of
the kitchen, which serves between 150 and 200 people daily. Over the
past two seasons, the garden has given children and their parents a
hands-on way to learn about food production and to experience nature
while here. I took the position at the end of the second season and have
already been amazed about how much I have learned about gardening with
kids and working with at risk youth populations.
The garden recently was awarded some money to expand and include a fruit
orchard. I have no experience in cultivating and maintaining fruit trees
and am overwhelmed by the amount of work it looks like establishing an
orchard would be. My question is has anyone successfully established and
maintained an urban orchard in Central Ohio and surrounding areas. If
so, what varieties of fruit did you grow and how much time and money was
needed to maintain the trees? I am trying to determine if undertaking
this project is feasible considering the population we work with
(transient families, youth, and community volunteers). When replying
please copy me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks,
