John,
After reading your message several times, I wonder if you really
understand what you are asking for.
1. I know for a fact that "government" is already involved in research and
development of more sustainable food production. Most of this work is being
done at the university level at colleges and universities around the
country. There are literally billions of dollars being spent every year in
these efforts. I've quite sure that you (and others)won't agree that every
project being pursued meets your standards; however, I'm sure that a large
number will. I challenge you to examine the projects being pursued at just
one state university with a college of agriculture. You will probably be
surprised at how much is being done in this area.
2. The second part of your question is more political. As a political
activist with many years experience, I can say with assurance that a
grassroots approach is the only thing that ever actually succeeds. The old
saw: "Think globally and act locally" has a lot of truth to it. If you and I
work locally to convince others that our ideas have merit, then in time, the
ideas, (If valid) will spread and become statewide issues. Etc, etc. etc.
3. Lastly, you state that: "I feel like a movement that doesnt engage
arguably the most established network of (potential) change-makers will find
it very hard to compete with the entrenched interests of the industrial food
system that are driving current policies and resisting the changes that so
many are advocating for." I must ask your assistance in identifying the
current policies that are resisting the changes that so many are advocating
for. That's a pretty sweeping statement; can you elaborate on that? Specific
identification of these policies is an absolute requirement, if we are
successfully attack them.
Best regards,
Phillip Williams

John,
I emailed you a copy of *545 People*. I do not need to make any further
comments because you have already answered your question: *"the government
corrupted by big agri-business interests?". *

John,
I am in Lubbock TX where cotton is king. The farmers will not change
because they get that big government welfare check every year. Go to:
http://farm.ewg.org/farm/index.php. Put in the name of a farmer and you
will see how much welfare funds he has received.

That's disgusting.? I just looked up my home county in Ohio (not where I
reside, where I was born and grew up) and looked at names of farm families I
know and find this all totally disgusting.?
