I am soooo jealous; if only my Bird of Paradise would bloom, but even it
doesn't want to be out now!

Subject: [Community_garden] (Old Tires) Will Spring Ever Come?
Greetings from Orange Blossom Community Garden in Sarasota, Florida where
the weather today was perfect for spring gardening (a beautiful sunshine
filled 74 degree day, the bugs aren't out yet).? The past few weekends at
our garden have seen 20-30 individuals franticly working to get their
spring garden planted.? Our new gardeners aren't complaining, but the
old-timers know that they are bound to have?some aching muscles from all
of their hard work in preparing their plots.?
You can check out our most recent publicity at
http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20090208/ARTICLE/902080334.? The
reporter was so impressed with the sense of community at our garden that
she filled out the application for a plot and wrote the check on the
spot.? She also returned the next day with her daughter's application and
check.
All of the "old tire" banter on the list serve sounds like everyone in the
cold, frozen north has a severe case of cabin fever that comes only after
you have worn out all of your new seed catalogs.? We welcome visitors and
our economy can certainly use the tourist $$$.? You?are always?invited to
drop by Orange Blossom and lend us a hand if you are suffering from a lack
of dirt under the fingernails.? We are notorious for sharing our fresh
veggies so you might even leave with a garden fresh salad and a ripe
tomato.
Seriously, I can't believe that anyone would want to use old tires in an
organic community garden although I have seen tire planters in yards
through out the rural south where people also tend to use the wrecked and
worn out cars for lawn decoration.? I am a southerner so I have a right to
comment on these things.? (My idea of the perfect horror movie involves
kudzu, old cars, and an old school bus and I refuse any further discussion
of kudzu).
One of my co-workers does use the rubber tire mulch in an interesting
manner:? for pre-emerge in places where she doesn't want any weeds to come
through her ground cover plants.? I find this totally appalling and think
that it speaks well to the potential toxicity of the material.? I didn't
need to read any fancy research papers to arrive at my conclusion!
Now will everyone please give the old tire discussion a rest.? Some of us
are very busy gardening.

PS:? Chris, I am sometimes plagued by the ??? problem on the list serve
also.? Email me off the list serve if you have any comments.
